Ready to grow out of the Junior Ranger club? Keep up your state park lifestyle and become a youth volunteer.
What does it take to be an Oregon State Park Volunteer In Park (VIP)?
VIP's must be between the ages of 8-18. To receive a permission slip and volunteer scorecard, call (toll-free) 1-877-225-9803 or contact the park of your choice. After you turn in your permission slip, you, or a group leader, will meet with a park staff member to receive a work assignment or group project.
Every time you or your group volunteers, record the time on the scorecard and obtain a park staff member's initials. Complete 25 hours of service work on this project, or do a variety of small projects adding up to 25 hours.
Once you've completed 25 hours of service, you'll earn a Youth Service Award (YSA). Awards are given to youth volunteers and youth leaders who participate in 25 hours of service and send a completed scorecard to Oregon State Parks headquarters.
As an added bonus, contact us if you want your project and photos featured here on the website. You provide the information, and we'll make a web page you can tell all your friends about!
Individual awards consist of a pin, framed certificate and letter of appreciation.
If you work in a group, awards consist of a pin, framed certificate, and letter of appreciation for each group member. The group as a whole receives a banner.
Although specific tasks depend on what the park's needs, examples of typical tasks are:
- Beach and riverside cleanups
- Repair and refinish tables, benches and signs
- Restore streams and fish habitat
- Recycling
- Trail work
- Restore native plant and vegetation
- Assist with Junior Ranger programs
- Help with clerical and office duties
